If You’re Happy…

Transmitter wrote this just before lunchtime:

If you’re happy and you know it… there’s a whole list of things to do. Unfortunately, you can’t rework these happy proofs backwards. I’ve tried clapping, but it does no good.

What do you do if you’re sad? Where are the childhood songs and anecdotes about sadness? My upbringing was clearly inadequate in this area. Maybe things would be different if I had grown up in the delta. Mr. Shines, can I call you daddy?

If you had an adequately poor, oppressed, delta-blues upbringing, a life like yours would be laughably sweet by comparison.

We’re all sad. Suck it up.

“Its four in the morning, the end of december
Im writing you now just to see if youre better
New york is cold, but I like where Im living
Theres music on clinton street all through the evening.

I hear that youre building your little house deep in the desert
Youre living for nothing now, I hope youre keeping some kind of record.”-Leonard Cohen

    To Frippy:

First of all, you know nothing about my upbringing. But, yes, it was nowhere close to a “delta-blues” upbringing. I was not comparing my upbringing to that at all, nor was I blaming my sadness on my upbringing. I was simply mocking my own inability to deal with my sadness, which has been brought about by my own actions and decisions. In jest, I thought that knowing some sad songs would help me.

Suck it up? Am I not allowed to be sad? I know that lots of people are sad. Is there a limit to sad people? Did I miss the cutoff? Fuck. I didn’t realize that my sadness diminished the importance of other people’s sadness. I’m sorry. I will never be sad again.

In parting, if me being sad or expressing my sadness irritates you, then don’t read about it. There are plenty of other places to frolic in on the web.

Transmitter, you’re a tool. “Suck it up” is good advice. Smile – shit’s never as bad as it seems.

    Off to troll the web…..

  5. Transmitter Says:

Tool? Wow. I haven’t heard that since middle school. But, you’re right. I should smile. I don’t want to appear melodramatic.

  6. mmmmeat Says:

:) Melodrama does make the world more colorful. Just don’t get mired down in it. Write a poem or paint something or sing “Sad Song” by Elton John.

  7. Transmitter Says:

Excellent suggestion on the Elton John. I recently picked up several Elton John albums on vinyl. I’ll turn up the stereo, let it all out, and move on.
